ERA package demonstration

Live fire demonstration using 4S24 container, located at a cedent distance from an armour plate creating a large air gap. The plate represents the side armour of an MBT. NII Stali confirms that the ERA package can be used as an all-around protective package on BTRs, BMPs and MBTs. 



The ERA block functionality was tested using a standard RPG-7 firing a PG-7VS HEAT charge with an approximate penetration value of 400mm against steel. 


Snippets slowed down for a better understanding of how the charge is countered by the ERA container. A reverse layer added. 





Post detonation effects on main armour plate. 

The ERA container and the large air gap almost nullified the potential chemical penetration of the HEAT charge. Resulting in small craters ranging from 2mm-5mm. 



Effectively the container holding the ERA is a one-time use addon which would need to be fully replaced. 


The total armour "thickness" is around 500mm from the ERA container to the armour plate. 


Interestingly enough, this demonstration only showcases the ERA performance when mounted as side hull armour, where the overall air volume is larger. Possibly the post-detonation effect would be more different if the ERA were to be mounted on a lighter vehicle like a BMP or BTR at a smaller distance to the armour plate. 

NII Stali as promised has showcased the ERA capabilities but sadly did not provide anything more valuable regarding light vehicle protection using 4S24 containers.

  Shown at an exhibition in Omsk in 2001. ERA  blocks are located on the side and frontal parts of the hull and turret together with rubber fabric and lattice screens.  Additional protection significantly increases the survivability of the BMP-3. This post expands on a previously covered topic, being the BMP-3 with ERA . Potentially sealing this topic until later when more information comes to light.  ERA package components:  ERA containers filled with 4S24 ERA elements, containers are mounted on the front and both sides of the hull. Slat armour mounted on the rear of the vehicle protects the engine compartment. Overall package performance:  Protection against AT rocket-propelled grenades (RPG) PG-7V, PG-7VS, PG-7VL, PG-7VM, PG-9S and other types of grenades capable of penetrating up to 600mm RHA within a 180 ° fire arc.  In areas covered by ERA containers, the probability of protection is at least 80%.  In areas covered by slat armour, the probability of protection is at least 50%.
