Modernized T-72 equipped with modern observation devices

In a qualitative way, the combat performance of T-72 tanks can be improved by equipping them with an all-day automated FCS (Fire-control System) with an integrated channel to use guided munitions.
This idea was conceived approximately in the late 1990s and throughout the early 2000s.

Modernized T-72

A T-72B was equipped with an already existing FCS at the time, taken from the early BTR-90 "Bakhcha" which featured the B8K1 multi-channel sight for the gunner and the B8K2 commander's panoramic sight.

The B8K1 sight replaced the old 1K13-49/TPN-3-49 night sights.

Early "Bakhcha-U" CM with B8K1 gunners sight and B8K2 commanders panoramic sight.

The new FCS offered:
  • Gunners multi-channel sight with integrated; laser-rangefinder, information guidance channel for ATGMs and thermal imaging channel. The sight block was equipped with a modern mirror stabilization system.
  • Commanders panoramic sight with an independent 2-plane stabilizer, television and laser-rangefinder channel.
  • Automatic target lead.
  • Information-control system with varying sensors.
  • The ability for the commander to override full gunner controls from his position.
  • Visualized system for gunner/commander, showing FCS performance, shells loaded in the carousel, topographic coordinates and the vehicle onboard information.

Characteristics

Sadly, this proposed modernization program for equipping baseline T-72 tanks, such as the T-72B, did not get far, considering only a single vehicle underwent this program. Probably due to the FCS being used from a completely different CM.
