Sprut-SDM1 testing will be finalized in early 2022 and potential wheelbased Sprut-SDM1 for the export market

'Rostec' continues to work on the creation of modern variants of weapons and military equipment both in the interests of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and for export supplies. In particular, the corporation's enterprises are creating new armoured vehicles, aviation complexes, small arms, anti-tank complexes and air defence systems, equipment for the soldier of the future. The industrial director of the Rostec armament complex, Bekhan Ozdoev, told RIA Novosti, Dmitry Reshetnikov, in an interview about the performance of the GOV corporation, the test status of the new Sprut-SDM1 amphibious light tank, its wheeled version for export, work on the self-propelled Lotus and the new intellectual complex of the Kalashnikov concern.

Q: "Are there initiatives underway to create a wheeled version of the Sprut-SDM1 for the foreign arms market?"

A: "This possibility is being considered. There is an idea to put the Sprut-SDM1 combat module on a wheelbase, which is likely to be amphibious. Which one exactly is an open question. Today there are several potentially suitable wheeled chassis. The choice depends on the customer and the tasks that he intends to solve using such a vehicle."

One thing is obvious, such a machine will have the firepower of the main tank, surpassing it in manoeuvrability and speed. In terms of protection and patency, it will be inferior because of the features of this type of chassis.

Q: "Has there been an analysis of how much such a vehicle will be in demand?"

A: "The wheeled Sprut, of course, will primarily become an export product. The most likely markets for wheeled tanks may be the countries of the Middle East and the African continent."

In the Russian Armed Forces, the use of such a tank is less likely. Traditionally, we give priority to tracked chassis. This is dictated by the peculiarities of our geography.
