T-90 with a promising sight returns at Army-2021

During the JSC Rosoboronexport live stream on YouTube which was showcasing the T-90MS to potential buyers (26th August 2021) at the Army-2021 event in Patriot Park, the T-90MS was shown in closeup video. The tank featured a new gunner's multichannel sight, which was also shown at Army-2019 on a different T-90MS in this post . PNM-T sight The tank is fitted with the PNM-T domestic sight with new gunner's and commander's control panels, replacing the old Thales manufactured ones. The sight in this instance is green under the beige protective cover, meaning it is a newly produced one compared to the older beige sight on the T-90MS at Army-2019, that had time to be painted in the tank's colours. This brings the confirmed number of tanks which house this sight up to at least 3. A new sight for the modernized T-90

Back in 2018, a new programme was started. This programme's focus is to create domestic equipment for Russian armoured vehicles, specifically optics. This is so that the Russian army can stop depending on the french company "Thales" and their Catherine technology. T-72B3 received new internal components for the Sosna-U sight, phasing out any foreign components. As for the T-90M/T-90MS, something else was done. Previously, the T-90M/T-90MS employed the Sosna-U sight, which featured french components from Thales. However, the internals of the sight was not simply replaced. This time, a completely new domestic sight was created under the name PNM-T. The sight was reportedly made by the PJSC ANPP TEMP-AVIA in 2018 or 2019. The first appearance was in the Telekanal Zvezda show, during the episode about the Proryv-3 (T-90M). In this episode, a new plaque can be seen with the name of the sight. T-80 fitted with "Burlak" combat module

Recently new images came to light, of a T-80 equipped with a familiar-looking combat module. Closely resembling the "Burlak" combat module which was previously mounted on a T-72B hull back in the early 2000s. On the photographs, it can be easily identified that the hull is the same as on the Object 219M "T-80BV-RM" which one of the prototype T-80BV upgrades made by Russia more than 10 years ago. The design of the turret is very similar to the "Burlak" CM, made back in the early 2000s by Omsk KBTM, now known as Omsktransmash. The turret itself seems to be in a more complete state, with a more refined turret design and finalized components. It sadly is unknown when this variant was tested and will it ever be accepted into the armoured forces. But the images show that the development of a new combat module has been continued past the "Burlak" and its presence on other vehicles other than the T-72B.

New panoramic sight for BMP-3M

"AGAVA" - "AGAVA-2" and its confusing history

When covering Soviet sight technology there are always some interesting designs and approaches to solving an issue. It is a common fact that the Soviet Union in the 1980s-1990s was quite behind in thermal sight technology. Only in the 1990s, but to be specific in 1992, the Soviet Union now Russia started to field small batches of thermal sights on their tanks, primarily T-80Us and some of the early T-90 variants, which just recently entered service. Russia's journey through creating its own domestic thermal sight traces back to 1982. The 1980s were quite an important time for the 'Krasnogorsk Factory named after S.A Zverev', which is still to date an Optical Engineering and Optoelectronics factory. The BMP-2M had many variants, ranging from BMP-2M with Combat Module B05YA01 "Berezhok" to BMP-2M with Combat Module "Bakcha-U" to more uncommon variants that never saw the light of being accepted into the Russian Armed Forces. BMP-2M with L-shaped support arm and additional armour protection on the sides One of the more unknown variants was the BMP-2M with an automatic grenade launcher. The firing capabilities were enhanced by installing a different weapon system. A 30mm AG-17 automatic grenade launcher is mounted in the turret rear on an L-shaped support arm with a vertical elevation mechanism. The AG-17 had the option to be controlled by 2 crew members. 50 years of the T-80

The most recent UVZ publication, celebrating 50 years of the T-80, showed several interesting sightings and additions. This variant of T-80U-E1 has a retrofitted hull that integrates Relikt. The combination of an existing T-80U-E1 turret with a Relikt integrated hull is interesting, even though Relikt integration is nothing new on older T-80 hulls, such as the T-80BV. Another minor detail is the presence of anti-slip coating on the ERA hull. Apart from the more obvious points, the presence of thicker rubber flaps around the turret geometry is something worth discussing. They seem to be twice the size of the original rubber flaps and are much thicker, having the layers bolted together. The layered composition is hard to identify in the original video, but it resembles the old flap design, with more layers. It is hard to say why the edges are bolted down. New Omsktransmash T-80BVM modernization batch

Omsktransmash has released footage showcasing the production of T-80BVM tanks. A T-80BVM was shown in its full combat loadout. Several interesting integrations can be identified. This T-80BVM is equipped with up-armoured mudguards, which are present on T-90M tanks and new T-72B3M batches. Previously, T-72B3 tanks have received additional ERA containers mounted on the side of the hull, this feature has been carried over onto T-80BVM tanks. This T-80BVM also mounts the same protective netting which is present on T-90M MBTs. In the same video, a very interesting observation can be made. Standard T-80BV turrets are retaining the old 1G42 housing while featuring a Sosna-U cover. This is very odd, considering that during the production of T-80BVMs the old housing is removed and welded shut and replaced with an auxiliary TV-based sight located next to Sosna-U.
